“The Screams in Silence”
Lyrics by Rena Patel
Original music and lyrics by Paul Simon
Hello darkness my old friend
I’ve been sent to repent again
Because of voices softly speaking
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the voices that were planted in my brain
Still remain
From the screams in silence
In endless days I sat alone
Narrow cells of rod and stone
‘Neath the glare of hating eyes
They turned their backs to the shrieks and cries
And the world had condemned
The people they wanted well
Sentenced to hell
To suffer the screams in silence
And throughout each pris’n I heard
Thousands of felons, maybe more
People living without feeling
People dying without living
People crying out
For someone who won’t be there
Gasping for air
Join in the screams in silence
“Fools,” said I, “You’ll never see
what solitary did to me.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you.”
Don’t let the world ignore
the people they pushed aside
And hid their cries
Trapped with the screams in silence

“Body Hair” by Linnea Rosenberg
[INTRO]:
If you can’t respect my body, then you need to go home
Hair exists on everybody, and that’s all you need to know
B-O-D-Y H-A-I-R, yeah B-O-D-Y H-A-I-R
[CHORUS]:
We let our legs free,
In the summertime
Throw our blades out
This is not a crime
There is no doubt
Grooming, I’ll go without
For some of us, we go mossy, mossy
(x2):
I’ll keep my body hair,
My body hair, body hair
Let that grow natural, oh
And let it upset you
[VERSE]:
Abstaining from beauty routines
All those things oppress me
Inherent to femininity
Not at all, only pains me
Plucking, shaving, waxing, too
Curling, crimping my new ‘do
I’m still clean, and still pristine
Nothing to do with hygiene
It’s about autonomy
Femmes and all identities
Don’t care if you disagree
We’re gonna let our hair grow free
None of us deserve to hurt
To your standards, we won’t revert
Feelin’ so empowered now,
Masochistic grooming must be disavowed!
[CHORUS] (x2)
If you can’t respect my body, then you need to go home
Hair exists on everybody, and that’s all you need to know
B-O-D-Y H-A-I-R, yeah B-O-D-Y H-A-I-R
A contrafact inspired by Fergie’s Glamorous
“Glamorous” is a pop song by the female vocal artist, Fergie, released in 2006. It is a personal narrative piece
about the unspoken difficulties and challenges that a life of fame poses on a celebrity. She writes that fame is a
blessing and a curse, bringing massive amounts of wealth and attention in exchange for freedom. She has to
constantly maintain her public image (i.e. staying “flossy”) while simultaneously trying to stay true to herself. I
felt that this dichotomy between Fergie’s ultra feminine, “glamorous” presentation and her carefree,
“unglamorous” state at which she feels most comfortable expresses the feminist struggle against gender
expectations for women. It is painful to uphold these beauty standards—plucking, waxing, straightening, and
curling hair is not enjoyable. I wanted to use a song that was relevant to my generation and make it an anthem
for people who choose not to adhere to these oppressive activities.

Description
An account of the resource
This is a song that is intended to function as a protest chant or unifying anthem that deconstructs the negative stigma surrounding leg, underarm, facial and pubic hair. This empowering contrafact is inspired by Fergie's "Glamorous"--a pop song from the early 2000s.

Core 3: Histories of the Present: Mobilizing Art: Activist Perform
15 September, 2016
Contrafact Project
Lyrics
Intro
Everybody listen up
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Everybody listen up
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Verse 1
Something is clear in how you behave
Your way of treating women is out of date
Just know that no means no
The one thing to accept
Is an informed, enthusiastic, and clear yes
Bridge
Ok, now my goal
Is to educate you
I’m not an animal
You can’t just come and “take it”
Even if I shake it
What I do is my choice
I have my own voice
And you should know that
Chorus
I’m not your girl
Don’t always want it
You can’t assume it
Don’t always want it
I’m not your girl
Your view’s problematic
You’ve gotta ask me
Golding !2
You can’t just nag me
Consent’s defined
Don’t always want it
You can’t assume it
Don’t always want it
I’m not your girl
The way you grab me
That’s called harassment
Can’t disrespect me
Verse 2
I’m not an invitation
Not just your recreation
Don’t matter what I’m wearing
I do not exist to please you
I’m not some object
Hey, hey, hey
I demand respect
Hey, hey, hey
You can’t expect sex
Hey, hey, hey
Repeat Bridge
Repeat Chorus
Statement
For my contrafact, I decided to write lyrics about consent to the tune of the 2013 Robin
Thicke song “Blurred Lines.” The popular song met lots of controversy due to it’s lyrics which
promoted rape culture, such as “But you're an animal / Baby, it's in your nature” and the repeated
“I know you want it.” Despite this, it was a hit song and was nominated for two Grammy
Awards, a sign of society accepting the objectification and degradation of women. By rewriting
the lyrics to promote the exact opposite message, I aim to harness the catchy beat into a song
which is both educational and enjoyable to listen to.

Yankee Doodle-Feminism
A girl was born into a world
that’s ruled by patriarchy
the men decided she should want
to be told that she’s pretty
Chorus:
pretty girl, don’t be a slut
but don’t be a prude
pretty girl don’t turn boys down
‘cause they say that is rude!
The girl was told that she could be
anything that she wants
but not a career that makes her
not want to just be hot
Chorus
Pretty girl don’t be too smart,
Boys won’t want to date you
Pretty girl don’t be too dumb,
Cause that just makes boys hate you
The girl realized that life was not
exactly very fair
she learned to be a feminist
and gave the boys a scare
Chorus
Pretty girl does not hate men,
Though some won’t be agreeing
Pretty girl just wants to be
A human fucking being

Contrafact Song
Her, His, Our Story
Elizabeth Graham and James Lafayette,
Percy Julian and Myra Bradwell,
Your time to shine is now,
I’ll learn about you somehow
CHORUS
You have made your mark
And its time we start
To study you
The history books are all skewed
With nothing vulgar or lewd
But you weren’t anything like that
So where is your tip of the hat?
CHORUS
I can think what class could be
With you there for all to see
I know that we’re missin’ out
Without everyone to study ‘bout
So its time we understand
That our textbooks are carefully planned
To leave out those who don’t fit
And we really should end it
CHORUS
Rationale
The original song “Fly Me Away” by Annie Little came out in 2009 and was little more
than a quick and quirky ditty about being in love with someone and the emotional
journey that can accompany being in such as state. I chose to use the melody because I
loved not only how catchy it was, but also how approachable and sweet it was. I think
that a lot of the time, activism can come across as a bit daunting especially to those who
aren’t familiar with it, so I was interested in making my song as approachable as possible
(and in this regard was deeply inspired by School House Rock!) Ultimately, my activist
goals for the piece was to raise awareness about the fact that many history textbooks
leave people out who, to quote a late CMC leader, “don’t fit the mold”, and to raise the
question as to why that occurs.
